Most modern day industrial scales are digital floor scales. They do not have a needle that rises or falls depending on the size of the load on the scale. Digital scales have a display window in which numbers appear, showing the weight of whatever has been placed on the scale.
In an industrial setting, a chemist cannot be expected to perform all of the necessary tasks. A chemical scientist works alongside of trained technicians. Whenever something heavy must be placed on a floor scale, that is the responsibility of a technician.
Sometimes, a technician encounters problems as he attempts to place a large, liquid-filled container on an industrial scale. Some of the liquid in the container may splash onto the scale. By purchasing a waterproof scale, an industrial chemist can avoid concerns about any liquids other than acids that might land on some part of a company’s valuable weighing equipment. If an acid should get onto a waterproof scale, then it can and should be rapidly washed off. After all, that scale has been labeled “wash down safe.”
Sometimes a chemist chooses to pursue a career in the field of biochemistry. In that case, the skilled biochemist could well end up working for a pharmaceutical company or a biotechnology company. While at such a company that biochemist might find it necessary to use a different sort of floor scale. The biochemist might need to work with a technician in order to place a gas cylinder on a cylinder scale.
While a biochemist seldom takes on the task of growing cells in a culture dish, a biochemist might well want to analyze the liquid from such a dish. In that case, the biochemist might work closely with the researchers who are responsible for culturing plant, animal or human cells.
After cells go into a culture dish, they get placed into an incubator. Carbon dioxide from a metal cylinder is fed into that incubator. There could come a time when a researcher felt compelled to weigh whatever cylinder had been delivered to the company where that researcher carried out his or her experiments.
The typical biotechnology company has a production department. That is where employees can find and use floor scales. The employees in the production department often have to prepare huge vats of various chemical compounds. They need to weigh those vats so they can be sure that each product contains an adequate amount of material. This is typically done using a digital scale.
